Album: In the beginning - the Worthington Steam Pump Co.
Henry Worthington built the first direct-acting steam pump in 1840, and joined William H. Baker in 1845 to form the firm of Worthington & Baker for the sole purpose of manufacturing steam pumps. He invented the duplex steam pump in 1857; Worthington continued building steam pumps for over a century.

The various steam pump builders have all left a legacy of surviving steam pumps, catalogs, engravings, photographs, and facilities. But one firm has left all of the above, plus a family who still maintains an interest in the company founded in 1864 by their great great grandfather, George Fordyce Blake.

Founded by the five Dean brothers in New York in 1869. The company moved to the south side of Indianapolis some time in the early 1870's. The company was privately owned until purchased by Met-Pro Corp. in 1984. They changed the company name to the Dean Pump Division of Met-Pro Corp., and the Dean Pump Division remains in business to this day.

A prosperous small town factory is bought out or merges with another firm. The combined firm then pulls out; leaving the town and it's employees wondering where to go from there. For Warren, MA in 1897, the solution was to build their own firm, which is still in business today.
