What is Surviving World Steam
Vehicles?
Surviving
World Steam Vehicles is a program for Microsoft Windows. Included is a database
containing roughly 50% of the steam Vehicles still in existence worldwide. It
includes steam vehicles under construction, preserved, working, stored, and
dumped or derelict. Included in the database are
- Traction Engines
- Steam Rollers
- Steam Cars and Carriages
- Portable Steam Engines
- Semi-Portable (including Donkey) Engines
- Steam Fire Pumpers
- Steam Wagons (Lorries)
- Steam Shovels, Cranes, and Draglines (not mounted on rails or ships)
- Oddities such as Steam Bicycles, Lawnmowers, and Loggers!
Each is stored as a single record, which can be thought of as an index
card. Each record (or index card) is subdivided into several sections, or
fields. Each field stores a single item pertaining to that vehicle, such as its
name, builder, or location. Browse through the database, one record at a time,
just as you might browse through a stack of index cards; or view them all at
once, in the form of a listing. Use the program's menu to view only certain
vehicles, and sort by most of the fields - Name, Class (or Model), Type,
Original Owner, Location, Builder, or Year.
- Use Surviving World Steam Vehicles at a steam rally,
thresher's meet or other steam meet to identify the vehicles there. (No
internet connection is needed!) Pictures can also be added from the Internet
and other sources.
- Use a scanner or digital camera to add photographs of the vehicles you have
found to the database! The program then becomes a database of your pictures.
- Use Surviving World Steam Vehicles as a study tool, to examine the
various design features of the remaining steam vehicles.
- If you are a modeler, you can use Surviving World Steam Vehicles
for tracking down survivors in order to take photographs or measurements.
- Surviving World Steam Vehicles can be used as part of a kiosk in a
museum exhibit. Photos of museum steam vehicles can be digitized and added to
the database. (Surviving World Steam Vehicles has a kiosk mode that
attempts to protect both the data and PC while allowing visitors to browse
through the records you select; directions for setting up the kiosk are included
in the Users Guide.)
- Unlike a book, Surviving World Steam Vehicles is updated
bi-annually. These updates are available at a very reasonable cost to all Surviving
World Steam Vehicles subscribers. In addition to the updated database, each
update contains additional pictures and an "Update Wizard", which
transfers your current pictures and sound clip links to the update as part of
the update process.
