The Surviving World
Steam Educational Guide is a companion to the Surviving World Steam
series of CD-ROMs. The information in this guide is geared towards educators or
interperators with limited knowledge about steam engines, although more
knowledgeable users will find plenty of useful information as well.
The Surviving World Steam Educational Guide It contains 50 pages,
broken down into the following chapters:
- Chapter One - Instructor's Introduction - A general overview
of the development of steam engines worldwide. Includes a map and list of
countries with surviving steam locomotives.
- Chapter Two - Steam Timeline Worldwide - A year-by-year timeline
listing the rise and fall of steam, from 1674 to today. Also included is a
graph of the total number of surviving steam by year and by type (locomotives,
vehicles, ships/boats), vividly illustrating the growth and decline of steam
transportation worldwide.
- Chapter Three - Setting up the Surviving World Steam CD-ROMs in
a Kiosk - How to set up the Surviving World Steam CD-ROMs in
classroom or kiosk environment to best protect both the information and the
computer itself.
- Chapter Four - Additional information on the Fields found in Surviving
World Steam Locomotives - Provides more details about the fields found

Surviving World Steam Locomotives.
- Chapter Five - Additional information on the Fields found in Surviving

- Chapter Eight - "Steam Lizards" - Last of the Working
Steam Engines - Directing-acting reciprocating steam pumps were used as
feedpumps on many of the various steam engines found on Surviving World
Steam CD-ROMs, as well as stationary engines. However, these pumps can also
be found hard at work today in chemical plants, refinerys, and other locations
worldwide. These chapter is an in-depth look at these simple but interesting
devices, both in their historic and present content. This chapter is a fitting
close to the Surviving World Steam saga, as Steam Lizards close
out the age of reciprocating steam power around the world. Includes eight color
and black-and-white illustrations.
